Employment Opportunity – Outdoor Ambassadors

We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated Outdoor Ambassadors to join the AmbassadorWILD program in Fernie, BC. As an Outdoor Ambassador, you’ll engage with visitors and local recreationalists, promote safe outdoor practices, and support the maintenance and stewardship of outdoor areas. Your role will combine fieldwork, educational outreach, and collaboration with local organizations to enhance the outdoor experience in the Elk Valley.
We are hiring Part-Time (20–25 hours/week) and/or Full-Time (35–40 hours/week) team members for the 2025 Spring/Summer season (May to September/October)

Job Description:
The Outdoor Ambassadors will primarily work outdoors at strategic tourism and recreation locations in the front and backcountry of Fernie and the Elk Valley.

Responsibilities:
Promoting Safe and Sustainable Tourism and Recreation Practices
Engage with visitors and local outdoor enthusiasts to promote safe and responsible practices aligned with specific activities (e.g., hiking, fishing, paddling).
Educational Tours
Educating on safety, backcountry ethics, trail etiquette and appropriate behaviors (e.g., minimizing impacts, managing food/garbage/noise).
Providing heritage and natural interpretation (flora, fauna, history, culture).
Offering additional local tips, visitor information, and relevant resources.
Light Duty Maintenance
Perform tasks such as picking up litter, changing garbage bags, packing out waste, cleaning toilets, dismantling fire pits, removing debris, cutting small branches, repairing signage, supporting signage/amenity installations, and other related duties.
Surveying Visitors and Local Outdoor Enthusiasts
Collect demographic data, place of residence, and feedback regarding their outdoor experiences. Document insights on opportunities, development needs, and concerns based on interactions.
Collecting and Documenting Site-Specific Data
Gather relevant data such as photos and written reports to track parking patterns, user behavior, waste issues, facility/amenity needs, and other impact-related concerns. This includes collecting trail and area counter/camera data.
Reporting and Documentation
Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and end-of-season reports to inform sustainable and ethical decision-making efforts.
Capturing Photos for Program Communications
Take photos of ambassadors “on-the-job” and with visitors (with documented consent) for sharing through program communications and on social media platforms, in collaboration with the Tourism Fernie team.
Involvement in Public Outdoor Education and Marketing Initiatives
Participate in outdoor education initiatives and contribute to program communications and marketing efforts. Lead workshops and presentations focused on safety, ethics, and sustainable practices. Facilitate hands-on learning experiences to promote responsible recreation.
Transportation
Safely navigate roads and operate program electric work-truck, including e-bikes, to support activities and transportation needs.
Collaborating with Volunteers and Volunteer Support Programs
Assist with the coordination and support of volunteer programs and initiatives.

Employment Duties & Requirements:
• Relevant post-secondary education (recreation, communications, tourism, adventure, environmental education, or other related fields) or equivalent experience.
• Experience in outdoor recreation and education is required.
• Outdoor recreation certifications and first aid training are required.
• Experience working with the public, tourists, and the community, demonstrating strong communication and educational skills with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, conflict resolution abilities, and computer proficiency are required.
• Class 5 driver’s license and a clean driving abstract.
• Experience and comfort in a mountain outdoor environment.
• Must wear the provided uniform.
• Knowledge of Rocky Mountain/Elk Valley natural history, local parks, trails, and a passion for sharing this knowledge.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience researching, planning, and delivering presentations that are professional, creative, relevant, engaging, and hands-on, focusing on nature, and safe, responsible adventure.
• Physical Effort Required: May involve long periods of sitting/standing, carrying a 40lb pack, moderate to high fitness, and comfort with day hiking/backpacking.
• Experience driving on front and backcountry roads is required.
• Physical Demands: Ability to work in all weather conditions, perform some office tasks, some remote driving, and work in remote wilderness areas.
• Mental Demands: Ability to manage regular interruptions, deal with potentially difficult users, collaborate on group planning, work independently, and handle public speaking/presentations.
• Sensory Demands: Ability to multi-task, balance priorities while experiencing interruptions, maintain attention to detail, perform occasional repetitive tasks, and meet travel requirements.

What We Offer:
The positions will be managed by Tourism Fernie and include the following:
• Seasonal full-time (35–40 hours/week)
• Seasonal part-time (20–25 hours/week)
• Duration: May to September/October
• Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings
• Must be available throughout the season, with a few exceptions
• Wage range: $21–$22.50/hour, based on experience and education/certifications
• Season-end incentive bonus
• An electric work truck and e-bikes will be provided to carry out work tasks during work hours.
• Uniforms and necessary tools provided for the job
