Pottery Studio Technician & Instructor

About the Role
The Pottery Studio Technician & Instructor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of The Arts Station’s pottery studio. This role is ideal for someone with technical expertise in pottery, a passion for community engagement, and a commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming studio environment.
We are looking for a skilled and self-motivated individual who can manage studio operations, maintain equipment, and support the growth of our pottery programs, as well as contribute to the broader success of The Arts Station. This includes assisting with general facility operations, events, and community initiatives. Instruction experience is an asset but not required.
Key Responsibilities
Studio Operations & Maintenance
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the pottery studio.
- Prepare, maintain, and manage glaze production.
- Maintain and repair studio equipment, including an electric kiln.
- Manage the kiln schedule, including loading and unloading.
- Oversee studio cleanliness, including clay reclaim and general upkeep.
- Ensure all studio users follow safety protocols.
Community Engagement & Instruction
- Schedule, train, and supervise studio volunteers.
- Supervise studio sessions for beginner potters and provide guidance on safe studio practices.
- Teach beginner-level pottery workshops for both children and adults (a criminal record check is required).
- Provide exceptional communication and customer service to studio users.
Administration, Inventory & Organizational Support
- Manage inventory, ordering, and sales of pottery materials such as clay, tools, and glazes.
- Maintain a daily activity log and timesheets.
- Assist with general facility operations, including opening/closing duties.
- Support Arts Station events, programs, and broader organizational initiatives as needed.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education or formal training in pottery, including technical aspects.
- Experience in glaze formulation and preparation.
- Experience with kiln operation and maintenance.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and digital literacy).
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to track tasks and follow up on action items.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures in a studio setting.
- Teaching or instructional experience (an asset but not required).
Work Conditions & Physical Requirements
- The role is on site at The Arts Station, Fernie BC.
- The studio is located in the basement of The Arts Station and is accessible only by steep and narrow stairs.
- Must be available to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds frequently.
Compensation & Schedule
- Hourly Wage: $20–$25 per hour, depending on experience.
- Hours: 18–30 hours per week, with typical shifts of 6 hours. Permanent position.
- Perks: Includes an annual Pottery Studio Membership.
- Start Date: Flexible, between May and July.
