Position: Visitor Centre Coordinator

Location: Fernie, BC

Reports to: Executive Director, Fernie Chamber of Commerce

About the Role:

The Visitor Centre Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Fernie Visitor Information Centre, ensuring exceptional visitor experiences both in person and online. This role requires a motivated and organized individual with strong customer service skills, local knowledge, and experience in tourism or hospitality.

Job Responsibilities

Visitor Services & Community Engagement

– Provide exceptional customer service by assisting visitors in person, via phone, email, and social media.

– Maintain a welcoming and informative Visitor Centre environment.

– Support major community events and festivals by offering visitor services.

 

Operations & Compliance

– Ensure the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) meets Destination BC and City of Fernie service contract requirements.

– Oversee facility maintenance, cleanliness, and visitor information inventory.

– Monitor and post Tourist Alerts and emergency notifications as needed.

 

Retail & Financial Administration

– Manage retail merchandise, including stocking, sales, and inventory tracking.

– Process payments, cash-outs, and financial transactions using QuickBooks and Square.

– Assist with invoicing, accounts receivable/payable, and shipping services (Purolator, FedEx).

 

Staffing & Reporting

– Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise seasonal staff.

– Ensure staff complete Destination BC Visitor Training and familiarization (FAM) tours.

– Collect and submit visitor statistics and monthly reports to stakeholders.

 

Chamber & Professional Development

– Collaborate on Chamber-led events and initiatives.

– Represent the VIC at industry conferences and training opportunities.

 

Qualifications:

 

Essential:

– Strong background in customer service, preferably in a tourism or hospitality role.

– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

– Strong organizational and time management abilities, with attention to detail.

– Self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable to changing priorities.

– Knowledge of Fernie, its attractions, accommodations, and events.

– Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

 

Desirable:

– Experience with QuickBooks and point-of-sale systems.

– Familiarity with digital marketing tools and platforms.

– Previous experience in supervising staff or volunteers.

 

Wage & Benefits:

– Full-time, year-round position (40 hours/week).

– Flexible to work some weekends as required.

– $20 – $22/hr, based on experience and qualifications.
